  1. Namashkar Hrishikeshji,

Here comes the opening ceremony 🙂 .

When I recite Shri Vishnu Sahasranama. There are in some versions invocation of “Shuklam Paradharam Vishnum..” , “Shri Vishnu Vandana”, “Dhyanam” , ” Rishi, Chhand, viniyoga”, and then the 1000 names ending with various uvachas of Shri Bhishma, Shri Arjuna and others..

Are there any merits and demerits of reciting parts other than the actual 1000 names ? What should be the rightful Madhava practice ?

    Kindly advise.

    Regards
    K

    • Thank You Sir 🙂

Two ways of chanting VishnuSahasra Nama
1# The way you mentioned, as per MS Subbalaxmi’s rendition which is the most popular and most people in South India have grown up listening to.
2# Om Vishvam Namaha; Om Vishnu Namaha; Om Vashatkaraha Namaha

For 2nd, the remaining shlokas are not essential. But I would suggest, Sri Vishnu Vandana, Dhyanam (each shloka has a specific roopa of Sri Hari associated), Rishi, Chand, Bheeja, Shakti, Keelakam,Viniyoga, Phala Stuti, Rama Rama Rameti * are all essential for each and every mantra.

Madhva way is to pray to Hanuma-Bheema-Madhva to grant Gyan, Bhakti and Vyragya.
Do achamane, pranayama, sankalpa, dhyana, chant shasranama, vandane, samapana, arpane and parischitta japa to forgive any lopas.

      Jai Bharateesha,
      Hrishikesh

      • Namashkar Hrishikeshji,

First of all. Wish you and your family a very happy and prosperous diwali. May Lord bless you with everything you desire.

Many thanks for this wonderful guidance. Please guide me what should be the Sankalpa because i do it most of the time due to Hari preeti only. And what is samapana and arpane ?. I am doing the rest of bit as per your post.

        Jai Shri Krishna

        • Thank you for your kind words, Wish you and your family a very happy and prosperous Diwali as well.

Sampana is the announcement of finishing the recitation; can be as simple as “Asya Sri VishnuSahasraNama Stotram Sampoornam”

Arpane is dedicating the karma to Sri Krishna via Mukhya Prana “Bharati Ramana Mukhya Prana Antargata Sri Krishnarpanamastu”

Your question on Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama prompted me to write a page on that. Please be sure to visit it 🙂 I was up until 3:00 AM
Sri Hari kept inspiring me and giving me ideas. I also posted a brief summary of SuMadhvaVijaya.

          Naham Karta Hari Karta !

If Sri Hari wishes what is impossible ?

          Jai Bharateesha,

  3. Hari sir, a common question, perhaps you might have come across this before. Per Sri Guru’s tattvavada, certain vegetables are to be avoided, which is mentioned in your blog on how to eat. While I can understand that it’s not dharma to eat other jeeva forms as food but not able to comprehend as to why specific vegetables should be avoided. Can you pls throw some light. Thanks Guru Rao.
